Why'd you change your recording name? It used to be Elly K, right?
Yes, I started out by doing recordings and performing as Elly K. However, as time went on, I felt less and less that it represented who I was. Elizaveta is my real first name. I grew up being called Elizaveta & Liza, which is the natural diminutive of Elizaveta in Russian. When I came to the US, I was very self critical, I thought Liza was too serious - and I wanted to start a new life. I had been watching a UK detective series, where a female cop, whose name was Elizabeth, went by Elly, and I liked that name. I felt it was friendlier and more approachable. So I took it. As soon as I was on the plane to Los Angeles to go to college, I started introducing myself as Elly. But as a bit of time passed, I realized that I outgrew it, and when I said: hi, I am Elly K, I do music - it felt wrong somehow. Like I was not really introducing myself properly - it felt awkward. So I decided to go back to my original name Elizaveta - and I am happy I did, because it feels right, even through changes.
